I am interested in the power of the unspoken conversation, where women can connect and converse without words. My recent work featuring multiple figures explores this subtle body language between friends, sisters and companions.
I started using costumes found at my local theatre costume department, and since them have been working with Edinburgh based Fashion designer Judy Clark and her beautiful historically influenced couture. I plan to carry on with this theme and work with more contemporary designers in the near future.
I have been inspired by
the kimono for many years. This is purely down to the design element of the
kimono. The pattern, balance and use of colour in these garments have been an
endless supply of inspiration. The textiles found in Uchikake kimonos are a joy
to paint as they have many reflective and textural properties. All the artists I adore, especially within
the Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement were heavily influenced by the
Japanese style.
